Airbnb has today announced that, from April 30, the use of indoor security cameras in listed properties will be prohibited globally.

Historically, Airbnb hosts have been permitted to install indoor cameras in common areas of their rental property, including hallways and living rooms, as long as they were clearly visible, not located in private areas like bedrooms or bathrooms, and their presence was disclosed on the listing.

"These changes were made in consultation with our guests, Hosts and privacy experts, and we’ll continue to seek feedback to help ensure our policies work for our global community," explained Airbnb’s Head of Community Policy and Partnerships, Juniper Downs.

Airbnb claims the new changes should only affect a small percentage of hosts, as the majority of listings do not report having a security camera.

Outdoor security cameras, decibel monitors and video doorbells are still permitted, however, Airbnb is implementing stricter rules around their use. Hosts will be required to disclose the presence and location of these devices before guests book the property, and they are prohibited from observing indoor spaces (i.e. through windows). They are also prohibited from being used in certain outdoor areas with an expectation of privacy, like outdoor showers, baths or saunas.

After the new rules come into effect on April 30, any violations reported to Airbnb will be investigated and could result in the removal of the listing or host account.
