Abode Security Kit Review: Great for Your Budget, but Limited Overall

Abode, a prominent DIY home security system player, has made a name for itself by offering compatibility with popular smart home platforms like Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Sonos, and Bose. In our previous tests, Abode's Iota and Smart Security Kit performed well, impressing users with their features and capabilities. Today, we turn our attention to their latest offering, the budget-friendly Abode Security Kit.

In a world where most DIY home security systems cost anywhere from $500 to $700, the Abode Security Kit stands out by keeping its price point well below the $150 mark. This pricing makes it an attractive option for individuals and families looking to bolster their home security without breaking the bank.

The Abode Security Kit is the more budget-friendly sibling of the Iota and Smart Security Kit. While it comes at half the price, it also offers half the features. The kit includes a hub, an entry sensor, and a keyfob, making it an ideal choice for small spaces such as studios and apartments.

Many of the Abode Security Kit's best features are available only with a monthly subscription, starting at a reasonable $7 per month. Subscribers gain access to cellular backup and CUE automation, enhancing their smart home experience. Features such as unlimited cameras and live/recorded video are also unlocked with this subscription, ensuring comprehensive coverage.

The Abode Security Kit supports voice control integration with Amazon, Google, and Sonos speakers. Setting up the connection is straightforward, with users simply signing into their Abode account via their speaker app. This integration allows for convenient arming and disarming of the Abode system using voice commands, with Google Home speakers requiring the additional security of a voice PIN for disarming.

While the Security Kit may lack compatibility with HomeKit, Zigbee, and Z-Wave devices, it still supports Abode's proprietary sensors, offering diverse options. These sensors include two types of glass break sensors, three entry sensors, and a unique multisensor capable of detecting motion, light, temperature, and humidity. This array of sensors provides valuable data to enhance home automation capabilities.

Loud security alarm: The Abode Security Kit features a blaring 93 dB siren, offering a solid deterrent to potential intruders. Users can customize exit and entry delays to suit their preferences.

Works with Alexa, Google, and Sonos: The compatibility with Amazon, Google, and Sonos speakers expands its usability in the smart home ecosystem.

Great for small spaces: The minimalistic design of the Security Kit makes it an ideal choice for small living spaces, and it can easily integrate with other smart devices.

Confusing keyfob: The keyfob's button symbols could be more intuitive, requiring users to consult the included guide. While not a deal-breaker, we'd love to see more user-friendly symbols.

Limited compatibility: The Security Kit lacks compatibility with HomeKit, Zigbee, and Z-Wave, which is disappointing compared to Abode's earlier models.

Lack of innovation: The Abode Security Kit feels more like a cost-effective alternative than an innovative addition to the Abode product line. Users may need to invest more in their smart home setup down the line, both in terms of additional devices and a monthly subscription.
